Before You Buy a Backpack Cooler FAQ

1. What are Backpack Coolers & How Do They Work?

First of all, these are insulated backpacks designed to carry food or drinks and keep them chilled at a cold temperature. Compared to cooler bags or ice chests, they are easier to carry while hiking or walking because they free up your hands to do other things.

Typically, the backpack will contain some sort of foam insulation surrounding the interior compartment. In addition, the inner lining is usually waterproof and leakproof.

Some cooler backpacks also feature additional dry compartments or pockets to store extra items that don’t need cooling. For example, granola bars, utensils, napkins, sunglasses, wallets or phones.

Note: To increase the efficiency of your cooler, add drinks and food that have already been chilled. In addition, you can include blue ice packs or frozen water bottles if you don’t want to pack ice.

Whereas ice can cool items faster, frozen water bottles or ice packs tend to keep contents colder for longer because they don’t melt as quickly.

2. How Much Can a Backpack Cooler Hold?

Backpack holding capacity depends on size, and these coolers come in several different sizes. That said, many of these insulated packs can hold between 18 and 36 (12-oz) cans plus ice. You can see different backpack sizes here.

3. How Long Can a Cooler Backpack Keep Contents Cold?

Rockbros Leakproof Cooler with High Density Insulation and Shoulder Straps

Average backpack coolers tend to work best for day trips, and can keep contents chilled for the day. However, you can get packs with thicken insulation, keeping food and drinks cold (at a a temperature below 40°F) for up to 2 full days.

4. How Long do Backpack Coolers Last?

Lifespan varies, depending on the pack you choose. In general, a well-made cooler backpack can last many years with average use and proper maintenance. That said, here some factors to keep in mind:

  1. Material: High-quality coolers made from materials like rotomolded plastic or high-density foam insulation can last for many years. On the other hand, cheaper coolers containing thinner materials usually don’t last as long.
  2. Use: Weather exposure impacts the lifespan of backpacks. Therefore, packs used more frequently in harsher outdoor elements typically don’t last as long as those used less often.
  3. Maintenance: Clean and store your cooler in a dry place when not in use, and you can extend the life of the product.

Note: Look for backpack coolers made from materials like heavy-duty nylon, PVC and TPU, which are known to be extremely durable. See the Rockbros Backpack Cooler or the YETI Backflip.

5. Are Cooler Packs Good for Hiking and Camping?

Yes, all backpack coolers are designed for use in the outdoors. However, some models are more rugged and durable than others. 3 of the most popular packs are the Rockbros Backpack Cooler or the RTIC Cooler Pack and the Icemule Backpack Ice Chest.

RTIC Waterproof Insulated Backpack Cooler - Keeps Ice & Drinks Cold for 2 Days

These 3 backpacks have thick insulation, so they can maintain a cold interior for days. Plus, they’re waterproof, puncture-resistant and they can even float as well.

On top of that, they have a large-enough storage capacity to work for a multi-day camping trip.

6. Can You Use a Backpack Cooler for Both Hot and Cold Items?

AMBOR Dual Compartment Cooler Backpack to Keep Items Both Cold and Warm

Yes, you can carry and store hot and cold items in the same backpack as long as they have dual insulated compartments. However, not all 2-compartment coolers can do this – check that both areas have insulation.

For example, the AMBOR backpack cooler comes with upper and lower coolers with high-density foam insulation. It can keep items chilled (with ice packs) for about 12 hours, and it can keep other food items warm for approximately 5 hours.

Alternatively, you can get a larger cooler that has one compartment that works for both cooling and retaining heat, like the Polar Bear Backpack Cooler. You just can cool and warm at the same time.

7. What Materials are Backpack Coolers Made from?

Backpack coolers are made from a variety of materials, including nylon, PVC, TPU or polyester. These fabrics are durable water resistant, so they perform well outdoors.

  • Nylon is lightweight, durable, water-resistant and easy to clean (think tent or parachute fabric).
  • PVC is water resistant and durable. Plus, it’s lower in cost.
  • TPU is a thermoplastic polymer that is flexible and water-resistant. They tend to cost more, but usually are more durable and long-lasting.
  • Polyester is lightweight, affordable, durable and water-resistant.

8. What is the Best Backpack Cooler Brand?

The YETI brand is known for its premium construction and superior insulation. Consequently, these packs can last a long time with minimal maintenance. If you use a cooler often for activities like camping, picnics, beach trips, tailgaters or work, these backpacks are well worth the investment.

In addition, Rockbros, RTIC and Icemule are right up there in the quality, durability and insulation department. Many people think they are equally as good, and you may be able to save some money.

Icemule Pro Cooler Backpack - Durable Enough for All Your Outdoor Adventures

Coleman is another well-known brand for making quality, yet low cost, products. Although their bags don’t offer 48-hour insulation power, you can grab one of their cooler backpacks with 12-hour ice retention for under $50.

9. How Do You Clean an Insulated Backpack?

Backpack cleaning requires very little work. However, regular clean-up after each use can keep it sanitary and help extend the life of your bag.

  1. First, wipe down the interior of the cooler with a damp cloth or sponge. Remove any spills or crumbs, and use a mild soap solution for tougher stains.
  2. Second, follow the same steps with the outside of the pack, finishing with a rinse and hang to dry.
  3. Third, let your backpack dry thoroughly before storing. This will prevent mold or mildew from developing.

10. Are Backpack Coolers Comfortable to Wear?

Although larger models can get heavy depending on what you put in them, they are designed to provide as much comfort as possible.

Rockbros Cooler Backpack - Leakproof and Stays Cold for 48 Hours

For instance, packs typically have thick, padded shoulder straps which are ergonomically design to rest comfortably on your shoulders. Plus, they help to distribute the pack’s weight evenly on your back.

In addition, the back side of the pack (which rests on your back) often has some sort of padding covered in mesh material. Therefore, it feels comfortable and also allows for air flow.
